Wig Care 101: How To Properly Shampoo & Dry Your Human Hair Wig

Wig Care 101: How To Properly Shampoo & Dry Your Human Hair Wig

Let’s face it, wigs are now a girl’s best friend. We wear them everywhere and I bet most of us have a spare unit in the glove compartment or back seat of our car. You know, for those emergency moments when we need a quick look.

Our wigs are always there for us and you would think we would be just as dependable. But, we have our moments. We wear our human hair wigs for months just to watch them become crusty, dusty, and life less. Then, our wigs accept their fate—a slow death in the back of the closet.

The good news is, you can always choose today as the day to start giving your lace frontals, closures, and glueless wigs the care they deserve. Let’s start with adding a simple wig care routine in the mix to get the most out of your investment.

Why Your Wigs Need a Wig Care Routine

How long does it take for you to be completely done with your wig? If you say less than 12 months, then you’re not getting your money’s worth.

Human hair wigs are human hair. Although wigs are convenient and add a bit of simplicity to our daily styling, they still need the same level of care that your natural hair requires. It seems so simple but if your wig is currently not up to par it may be time to adopt a routine to care for it.

If you frequently style and wear your wigs, you should shampoo and condition them every two to four weeks. For lower maintenance wearers, you should go no longer than six week without a shampoo and condition.

Simple 5-Step Wig Care Routine for Flawless Wigs

A wig care routine is similar to your wash day routine for your natural hair. Follow the steps below to bring your wigs back to life.

Step 1:Gently Detangle Your Wig

Before you start your routine, it's important to remove excess dirt and tangles. This will make washing your hair easier. Starting at the ends of the hair, use a detangling wig brush to gently brush up the hair shaft. Be sure to brush the hair strands in the same direction to reduce tangling during the shampoo.

Step 2: Infuse Moisture with a Gentle Shampoo

Use lukewarm or cool water to saturate your entire wig. Avoid using hot water because it can create excessive dryness in your wig. Over time this will cause breakage, shedding, and degrade the quality of the wig.

Once your wig is completely saturated, take three pumps of EastWay Beauty's Moisture Infusing Shampoo and gently work a lather. In a downward motion, evenly distribute the shampoo throughout the wigs. If you don't get a good lather on the first shampoo, rinse well, and complete a second shampoo.

Use a towel and wrap the hair to gently squeeze out excess water.

Step 3: Apply a Deep Conditioning Treatment to Restore Hair

If you frequently use heat to on your wigs, have colored, or style them in ponytails, you will need to nurse your strands back to health. The Deep Restorative Hair Mask uses natural fats like, coconut oil, to rejuvenate the hair.

Take a few scoops of the Deep Restorative Hair Mask and apply to the wig. Be sure to avoid the lace and knots. You can use a detangling brush to evenly distribute the mask throughout the hair.

Cover with a plastic cap an apply low heat for 15-20 minutes. Then, rinse the hair until the water is clear.

Step 4: Add Shine with a Hydrating Conditioner

At this point, your wig should have an appropriate amount of moisture. The Rich Hydrating Conditioner's formula restores the wig's natural shine. It does this by sealing the moisture inside each strand.

Using two pumps of the Rich Hydrating Conditioner, work the product into the hair. Avoid applying the conditioner to the lace and knots. Let the conditioner sit for five minutes and rinse the hair until the water runs clear.

Wrap your wig in a towel and gently squeeze any excess water. DO NOT rub the wig with the towel.

Step 5: Mold Hair and Air Dry

If you are in a rush it is okay to dry your wig using a hooded dryer or blow dryer. Just remember to apply a good heat protectant and use the lowest heat setting to avoid damaging the hair. For the best results, we highly recommend molding your hair on a wig head and allowing it to air dry completely.

For curly wigs, use a hydrating setting foam or mousse to set the curls and allow to dry for 24-48 hours. For straight and wavy wigs, define your parts, apply mousse, and let them air dry.

Once your wigs are dry, apply a dime sized amount of EastWay Beauty's Nourishing Hair Serum to the wig and style as usual.
