Over the past 10+ years, I've taken my hair through hell and high water. Braids, relaxers, locs, big chops, and so much more. Combine that with pregnancy hormones, and I was left with dry, lifeless, and damaged hair.Â
Despite my background in natural hair care, I'm the worst at keeping mine together. I don't take my own advice and I outright neglect my fine, 4C hair every chance I get. After having my youngest child, things only got worse.Â
Shedding, thinning edges, and stress during the pandemic all contributed to my hair issues, and I was lost when it came to hair products.Â
Here's what happened.
What Happened To My Edges?
About six months after giving birth, my hair started falling out. Not to the point of having bald spots, but I was losing clumps of hair daily. Most people chopped it up to breastfeeding and postpartum hair loss. I wasn't too worried at first, but then I did something dumb.
I braided my hair into "wig braids." But I made the mistake of braiding my hair too tight and wearing a wig that was too snug on my edges. The friction was too much on my already fragile hair, and it fell right on out. At this point, I was panicking. So, I decided to take my hair down and wear it natural for a while.Â
Well, that didn't work because now I was dealing with dryness from the winter, and my hair continued to break. There was nowhere for me to turn to because we were in the middle of lockdowns and I couldn't seek the help of a professional.
Note: If you're struggling with your hair, please see a professional. Even if you know your hair, seek help.Â
Fortunately for me, I was sent the Moisture Balance Kit from Sunday II Sunday. I talk about the one product that grew my edges back below.Â
Sunday II Sunday + The Moisture Balance Kit
The Moisture Balance Kit is a hair care system designed for active women who workout. It helps to cleanse your hair and scalp while restoring moisture stripped away from sweating.Â
I'm not super active, but I do workout. For complete transparency, I don't use these products post-workout as directed. Instead, I use them in my daily and weekly hair care routines.Â
ROOT REFRESH Micellar RinseROOT REFRESH uses apple cider vinegar and micellar water to break down oils, dirt, and sweat without shampooing your hair. I use it because (1) I LOVE how it smells, and (2) it helps me easily remove my lace frontals without using alcohol.Â
I recommend this product for hair types 3A-4B. In my opinion, I feel like finer hair could benefit more from a light cleansing in between washes.Â
SOOTHE ME Daily Scalp SerumÂIf you have a dry scalp or need scalp relief after getting a fresh set of braids, SOOTHE ME Daily Scalp Serum is perfect for reducing inflammation and itchiness. It has peppermint oil and a patent pending ingredient, Alternsis Botanical Complexâ„¢, that reduces dandruff in a month.Â
It was a little on the watery side, but it does work when I have braids. I recommend it for 3A-4C hair.Â
REVIVE ME Daily Moisturizing SprayI love the REVIVE ME Daily Moisturizing Spray for adding quick moisture to my hair. It aims to provide light moisture while also defining curls. As an added bonus, if used regularly, it promotes a healthier scalp in less than 30 days.Â
I recommend this for all curly hair types. If you have 4C hair, you may have to combine this product with a curling cream and twist to see defined curls.
EDGE FLOURISH Daily Nourishing SerumWe've finally come to my FAVORITE product. The EDGE FLOURISH Daily Nourishing Serum is what I used to grow my edges back. I like to describe this as "vitamins" for your edges. It has a blend of different oils and Biotin that protect, repair, strengthen, and nourish your edges.
I do not recommend this for finer hair because it can be a bit too heavy on the hair. But if you suffer from extremely dry scalp and hair, then this is perfect for you.Â
Have you tried Sunday II Sunday? If so, what was your favorite product?
